Why Hoofbeats for Health – Bridging Equestrianism and Welfare?

General
29 October 2026

As we prepare to welcome the HETI community to Oslo in May 2027, we would like to share a little more about the theme of the 19th HETI Congress:

Hoofbeats for Health – Bridging Equestrianism and Welfare

But why this theme?

Because the horse is part of the equation

Horses play many different roles in our lives. Around the world, they are part of approaches to physical and mental health, rehabilitation, education, learning and social participation.

But the connection between horses and health goes beyond organised therapy and educational programmes.

Horse ownership and equestrian activities can also contribute to public health and prevention. Time spent outdoors, physical activity, contact with animals and the social connections that grow around horses can all be valuable for people’s health and quality of life.

Whether through therapeutic work, educational activities, riding, stable life or simply being part of an equestrian community, horses can create opportunities for movement, meaningful activity and social belonging.

And there is another part of the equation that is just as important: the welfare of the horse.

If horses are to contribute to human health and wellbeing, their own needs and welfare must be central to how we work and interact with them.

Bridging knowledge and perspectives

The HETI community brings together researchers, therapists, educators, horse professionals and practitioners from many different countries and disciplines.

The congress theme is an invitation to connect these perspectives – and to explore how they can learn from one another.

How can research and practical experience strengthen each other? How can horses contribute to health, learning and participation across different settings? And how can we develop practices that benefit both people and horses?

We also want to recognise the wider role of equestrianism in society. This is why we are involving Norwegian equestrian and horse sport organisations in the congress. Their knowledge, experience and reach can help us explore the connections between horses, physical activity, social participation, preventive public health and horse welfare.

A theme for the whole congress

Hoofbeats for Health is more than a title. It is the thread running through the congress, connecting different disciplines, experiences and perspectives.

With participants and contributors from around the world, we hope Oslo 2027 will be a place to share knowledge, challenge ideas, build new connections and explore how horses can contribute to human wellbeing while ensuring that their own welfare remains a priority.

And, of course, there will be plenty of opportunities to meet old friends and make new ones along the way.

We look forward to welcoming you to Oslo and exploring what Hoofbeats for Health can mean for people, horses and society.
